175 Years of Swiss Railroading.

On the occasion of this memorable anniversary, the SBB is presenting an electric locomotive with a correspondingly eye-catching special design. The locomotive chosen for this occasion is the Re 420 251 (ex Re 4/4 II 11251). This universally usable class was the mainstay of locomotive-hauled SBB traffic for decades and, with 276 built between 1964 and 1985, also has the highest number of any class built for Swiss Railways. The locomotive was designed and staged by the well-known artist Gudrun Geiblinger.
It all started with the Spanish Brötli - a delicious pastry from the Swiss spa town of Baden. That's not quite true, of course, but on 9 August 1847, the first railway built in Switzerland began its scheduled service from Zurich to Baden. Now the servants of Zurich's fine society could comfortably pick up the famous pastries arriving by train early in the morning and deliver them punctually to the Sunday breakfast table without having to complete an hour-long hike to Baden and back. That's why this route soon came to be known as the Spanish Brötli Train. In the years that followed, a rail construction boom broke out in Switzerland, reaching a length of 2,457 km within 35 years. Finally, between 1902 and 1909, the nationalisation of five major railway companies created the Swiss Federal Railways. As a result, an increasingly dense rail network wove its way across Switzerland, which is still used extensively today. After all, the Swiss have an absolute record for rail use, with each person travelling an average of around 1,800 km by train per year.
