Fast passenger trains known as "Eilzüge" were not express trains, but they were more than just an ordinary passenger train or commuter train. They linked larger cities together and made stops at medium sized stations along the way. Often, they ran on branch lines or main lines that were not the great traffic paths. For that reason they were sometimes referred to colloquially as "Heckenblitze" or "Hedge Lightning". Introduced by the German State Railroad at the end of the 1920s, the fast passenger trains formed backbone of the railroad's passenger service for linking regions together. The concept and the train class "Eilzug" remained in use with the DB until well into the 1990s. The present day "Regionalexpreß" or "Regional Express" is the closest equivalent to the good old fast passenger train.
