  • Prototype information

The class E 75, a further development of the class E 77, was originally supposed to number 79 units. This plan was thwarted by the global economic crisis and the total was reduced to 31 locomotives. Twelve units with mechanical gear from Maffei were delivered to the German State Railroad Division in Munich in 1928/29. The DRG"s Hannover and Halle Divisions were initially assigned 11 locomotives with mechanical gear from Linke-Hoffmann for the central German routes, and starting in 1930 another 8 units with mechanical gear from BMAG were also delivered. The electrical equipment for all of the class E 75 units came from a cooperative project of BEW and MSW. With a maximum speed of 70 km/h or 44 mph the E 75 was suitable primarily for freight service, but was also used for passenger service. While its traction motors were the same as those in the E 77, the E 75 was equipped with new double arm pantographs that allowed the locomotive's roof to be raised 100 mm / approx. 4". This class was the last one for DRG electric locomotives to use side rod drive. Some of these locomotives were retired on June 4, 1964. There were still 12 units in existence in 1969, and in 1971 only 2 units were still in service. One locomotive remains on the DB roster as an operational museum locomotive.
