The class S 3/6 locomotives purchased by the Royal Bavarian State Railroad starting in 1908 were one of the most successful and beautiful designs to originate from Bavarian locomotive building. Under their new designation as the class 18.4 in the German State Railroad period, they formed the backbone of the extra-regional express passenger service at the point of renowned long distance trains such as the Rheingold or the Orient Express. Thanks to high levels of performance with simultaneously low fuel consumption, additional units of the class 18.5 were ordered up to 1931. The last units of this locomotive family were not retired until 1966. Several museum locomotives remain preserved, among them an operational unit at the Bavarian Railroad Museum in Nördlingen.
