The class 52 with a condensation tender was developed in the 1940s so that locomotives could travel long distances where water supplies were insufficient. The exhausted steam was not simply expelled out of the smoke stack, but was condensed back into water in the tender over cooling fans. This water was then fed back into the boiler to produce steam. This allowed the range of the class 52 to be expanded considerably.
