The German State Railroad's series of standard design locomotives also included a fast Mikado design freight locomotive. In 1936 the Berlin firm of Schwartzkopff delivered the first unit of the class 41. This locomotive proved its abilities pulling more than freight trains. It turned out that the railroad had a true general-purpose locomotive for medium heavy trains. After 1945 the DB used its 216 units in general-purpose service pulling passenger and freight trains.
