The class RAm/DE diesel electric rail car trains were purchased jointly starting in 1957 by the SBB and NS. The Swiss and Dutch trains were externally and technically identical; there were only slight differences in the selection of upholstery and interior decoration. A total of 5 units were built, which were used between Zürich and Amsterdam on the Rhine route and between Amsterdam and Paris. Later, the trains were also used on the route between Munich and Zürich. Four trains were sold to Canada in 1976, where they were run almost 20 years as the "Northlander". 5 cars without the power car came back to Europe in 1999. They first waited in Switzerland and now in the Netherlands to be renovated into the TEE nostalgia train.
