  • Prototype information

By 1973 the German Federal Railroad had bought a total of 143 class 103 electric locomotives for the startup of the Inter-City network planned for the beginning of the 1970s. Siemens, Henschel, AEG, BBC, Krupp, and Krauss-Maffei all participated in the building of these locomotives. These locomotives made it possible for the first time to plan regularly scheduled train speeds of 200 km/h / 125 mph, and on September 9, 1973 the speed record at that time of 252.9 km/h / 158 mph was reached on the line between Gütersloh and Oelde. When the dual class IC 79 system was introduced in one hour schedules starting in 1979, the class 103 became a brand symbol for the German Federal Railroad. Road no. 103 109-5 was the first regular production version of the legendary class 103 placed into service in 1970. It had silver-gray striping around the vent grills to make the locomotive look more elegant. Road no. 103 109-5 was however the only locomotive painted this way. All of the other units were delivered in the usual beige / crimson red paint scheme, that of the 12514 Minitrix model.
