The constantly acute shortage in locomotives in the area of the former German State Railroad assured the class 01 standard design locomotives in former East Germany of an even longer life. They demonstrated their abilities as motive power for express and fast passenger trains will into Era IV. Some of them were rebuilt (and designated afterwards as the class 01.5) and formed the backbone of the important express train service on non-electrified routes. Even today several examples of the class 01 are still in used on museum railroads all over Germany.
