A Tune-Up for the 41. The class 41 locomotives were bought starting in 1936 and showed increasing evidence of metal fatigue in the boilers as early as the Fifties. Therefore, they were equipped with new boilers starting in 1957; these new boilers were identical with those used on the class 03.10. As part of this rebuilding, 40 units were converted to oil firing and were equipped with the characteristic oil tender. The rebuilding increased the performance slightly. In the long run, despite good results the concept of the oil-fired steam locomotive could not compete with the better efficiency levels demonstrated by diesel locomotives.
