LINT Excellence 350. "LINT" stands for "Lightweight Innovative Commuter Service Cars" in German and describes a universal concept presented by the builder Linke-Hoffmann-Busch (LHB) 10 years ago to the German transportation companies. The innovations are the lightweight construction, the environmentally friendly propulsion technology, and the modular equipment concept for the requirements of each railroad buying these trains. A LINT can be built as a single-unit train (LINT 27) or as a two-unit train with a Jakobs truck (LINT 41). Larger versions are technically possible but have not yet been built. The elevations of the interior space and the entries can be done at the level of a streetcar or at the normal station platform height for the railroad. The propulsion system is two diesel motors mounted below the floor and cardan shafts to the end trucks. The motors can be equipped with soot particle filters if desired. The DB Regio has bought 30 single unit rail cars as the class 640 and 60 two-unit trains with high platform entries as the class 648 for different networks. An additional 250 units are already in use on regional and private railroads in Europe. These units have given good results and are popular with the passengers. Additional orders are pending for these powered rail cars that are now integrated into the Alstom Coradia family of railroad vehicles. Since its takeover by Alstom in 1998, the builder is now operating as Alstom LHB, Inc.
