At the end of October 1998 the third generation of the ICE, the ICE 3, was presented to the public for the first time in Berlin. In addition to a whole series of technical improvements, the most striking feature of the newest offspring of the ICE family is its new propulsion concept. Instead of several powered end cars, the propulsion system on the new model is distributed under the individual cars for the entire length of the train. This method ensures a harmonious operating feel and at the same time greater operational reliability. In addition to the units designated as the class 403 for the German Railroad, Inc.'s power system, there is also the class 406 as a multi-system version for cross border service with other power systems. Several trains are equipped this way for use on the Dutch State Railroad.
