Since 1994 German Railroad, Inc. has been running the "InterCityNight", a fast, comfortable hotel train. A special feature of these unit trains are the short, light weight cars that are mounted on single-axle trucks with separately steered wheels, in contrast to traditional trucks. The advantages are lower train weight, reduced use of material and energy, high acceleration rates and considerable speed. The idea for this design came from Spain. The firm Patentes Talgo S.A., established in 1942, has brought out four generations of Talgo trains, including provisions for changing track gauge for international traffic since 1968. Another special feature is the concept of the "InterCityNight". All 160 cars offer the highest level of hotel comfort: spacious compartments, a shower bath as an enclosed system, telephone with service call feature, personal coded keys and above all quiet. An automobile transport car is also run in some of the trains. The surprising thing is that contrary to its namesake the InterCityNight is painted in the colors of the InterRegio.
