  • Product description

    Model: Era III,
diecast metal frame, boiler, and tender. Locomotive
comes with a built-in DCC decoder in an 8-pin NEM digital connector and with a sound
effects circuit. High-efficiency motor with bellshaped
armature and a flywheel in the boiler. 8 axles powered. 4 traction tires. Articulated frame enables the locomotive to
negotiate sharp curves. Framework with Boxpok
wheels. Center driving wheel axles spring loaded. Headlight, backup light on tender, and
number boards have maintenance-free LED's. 2 smoke generators can be retrofitted into the locomotive. Headlights and smoke generator contact
will work in conventional operation and can be controlled digitally. Speed-dependent steam
locomotive sounds, bell and whistle, number boards and engineer's cab lighting as well as acceleration and braking delay can be digitally
controlled. Powerful speaker in the tender, volume can be adjusted. Coupler hook can be
mounted on the pilot. Close coupling between the locomotive and tender. Steam lines swing
out with the cylinders. Separately applied hand
rails and grab irons. Many separately applied details. Figures of locomotive engineer and fireman for the engineer's cab are included.
Length over the couplers 465 mm / 18-5/16".

Information about operating this locomotive: This locomotive can be used on curved track with a minimum radius of 360 mm / 14-3/16", but we recommend curves with a larger radius. Due to the overhang of the long boiler, signals, catenary masts, bridge railings, tunnel portal sides, etc. must be mounted at a suitable distance from the edge of the track on curves. The track must be mounted securely for the high weight of the locomotive. The 22598 model is designed for the European NEM two-rail system. The 22599 with RP 25 wheels and Kadee-compatible couplers is offered for American two-rail systems.

This model can be found in an AC version in the Märklin assortment under item no. 37991.

In the center of the UNION PACIFIC"s route network is the steeply graded line between Cheyenne and Laramie on Sherman Hill. It goes through the Wasatch Rocky Mountains and on west to the Great Salt Lake. At the end of the 1930s, the freight trains on this route became longer and faster and required time-consuming, costly doubleheading with several locomotives. A specially designed new locomotive with immense dimensions was planned to relieve this situation. The necessary high power output and the correspondingly high weight had to be translated to the rails on an articulated locomo-tive frame. The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) developed a colossus with a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, with a service weight of over 500 metric tons and a length of 40.5 meters or 132 feet 10-1/2 inches. This giant was respectfully named the "Big Boy" in ALCO"s erecting halls. The name became the embodiment for the largest steam locomotive in the world. A total of 25 Big Boys were built in 1941 and 1944. They were in use around 20 years in Utah and Wyoming and each one ran over 1 million miles. Eight of the Big Boys retired from roster at the beginning of the 1960s are still in existence. They still give you an unforgettable impression of the former size.
