In the course of railroad history there have been many attempts to equip locomotives with snowplow blades. However, these devices usually failed as soon as the snow reached a depth of 40 cm. The breakthrough was first achieved by the Austrian railroad man Rudolf Klima with the snowplows named after him. Equipped with an adjustable plow blade and movable side wings, these plows could be used effectively for snow up to a depth of 1.5 meters. In 1929, the German State Railroad Company purchased the first Klima plows. The Henschel company of Kassel purchased the manufacturing rights in 1931. The German Railroad purchased 100 of the total 250 plows manufactured in various models. Additional Klima snowplows were acquired up until the year 1964.
