The type Res 687 cars are used to transport heavy rolled shapes and other bulky heavy freight such as vehicles and bulk material. They are also often seen with densely loaded concrete ties. Due to their low floor height, these cars can also be used to transport containers. The tare weight is specified at 56 metric tons at a car weight of 23 metric tons. Between 1979 and 1985, 4,350 type Res 687 cars were built for die DB. Builders were MAN and Waggon Union Berlin among others. Type Res cars are currently a standard type on the European freight railroads. In addition to the DB AG, many other railroads and even private operators provide such cars in large quantities.
