    Hard coal as well as lignite coal is used to heat coal-fired power plants. As steam power plants they produce steam in a boiler by burning the coal. This steam is under pressure and it is superheated and then fed into a steam turbine. The steam turbine then drives the power plant"s generators. Modern filter equipment reduces the amount of environmental emissions. This was not always the case. About 30% of the power requirements in Germany are covered with coal-fired power plants - not so on your model railroad. There the current still comes from the wall outlet …
