Prototype information

The class 01 locomotives with an axle load of more than 20 metric tons were much too heavy for many German State Railroad Company (DRG) routes that had not yet been improved. Starting in 1930 the DRG purchased the class 03 as a lighter version of the class 01, so that seamless passenger service with modern steam locomotives could also be guaranteed on these routes. A total of almost 200 units of this class were placed into service by 1937, of which most were acquired after the war by the German Federal Railroad and by the German State Railroad (East Germany).
