Prototype information

Early Freight Transport Specialists - The railroad grew rapidly at the end of the 19th century in Prussia as well as in other regions of the former individual German states. One result was that the expansion of freight traffic demanded special freight cars for special transportation tasks. Among such freight specialists were cars bought by the state railroads as well as by private firms. These cars were equipped in very different ways, depending on the job they had to do. Since the state railroad companies had agreed on common standards as part of the agreements dealing with the founding of the State Railroad Association in 1909 - in particular standards for equipment for pulling and pushing railroad cars - many of these cars were soon used in "cross-border" traffic in train consists on foreign rail networks. This led in part to very colorful mixes of cars.
