Prototype information

In 1962 the German Federal Railroad placed new cars into service for its important long distance passenger service. These cars were planned to revolutionize passenger train travel. These cars offered a new standard in comfort that had not been achieved since the reform of the class levels in German passenger cars. Only the best was good enough. A bar, a train secretary as well as (almost unheard of at that time) telephone booths on board enabled comfortable travel, above all for business people. The characteristic shapes of the vista dome car and dining car underscored even more the extravagance of these new trains. The German Federal Railroad's awareness manifested itself particularly in the "Rheingold" logo lettering applied to the vista dome car. This logo had been a synonym for deluxe travel since the 1920s. A new star in the railroad heavens now left its stamp on the look of railroad operations in the Rhine Valley.
