The greatly increasing train loads in passenger service demanded the last reserves in power from the existing Palatine Railroad locomotives, especially on the many curves on the route between Kaiserslautern and Neustadt/Haardt. The Palatine Railroad therefore looked for a suitable locomotive for the important long distance passenger service in order to avoid double-heading with its expense in personnel. A direct decision was made to go with the Bavarian class S 3/6 locomotives. The S 3/6 was the first choice of the Palatine Railroad for political reasons (at that time the Palatinate belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria) and also because of the extremely successful design. Only a few modifications were necessary for the locomotives to be able to negotiate the 19 meter / 62 feet 4-1/16 inches turntables in use on the Palatine Railroad. The ten locomotives ordered quickly formed the backbone of the important long distance passenger service between Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, Neustadt/Haardt, and Ludwigshafen. These locomotives were also used for trains to Strassburg, Mainz, and Stuttgart.
