Prototype information
Starting in 1960 the class 52.80 was developed from the rather Spartan class 52 of the war period as part of the German State Railroad"s rebuilding program. Today this class is the most widely distributed steam locomotive in Germany. Numerous examples remain preserved, since this proven locomotive formed the backbone of steam operations on the German State Railroad in East Germany until well into the 1980s. Starting in 1960 200 units were taken into the railroad's maintenance facilities and equipped with new boilers from the class 50.35 with mixer superheaters. These locomotives were indispensable until 1987 on the point of freight and even passenger trains. Many locomotives were taken in by museums and are still in use today.
