The German State Railroad series of standard design locomotives foresaw, among other things, a fast Mikado design freight locomotive. In 1936 the Berlin firm of Schwartzkopff delivered the first class 41 locomotive. This unit proved itself as useful for more than just freight trains. It turned out that the railroad had a real general purpose locomotive for medium heavy trains. Even after 1945 the DB used its 216 units of this locomotive universally for passenger and freight trains.
