The class V 80 ushered in a new era in German diesel locomotive construction. The first units were placed into service in 1952 as the first locomotives with hydraulic transmissions. New technical features were the welding technology used on the frame, the trucks, and the superstructure. The drive gear with universal joints was also something new. The railroad followed the contemporary taste of the times with streamlined styling and flowing shapes in the design of the locomotive body. The V 80 was used for commuter and fast passenger trains, but was also seen pulling light freight trains.
