A clever move on the part of DB Cargo: The class 182 was born of necessity. ÖBB officials would not authorize the DB Cargo"s class 152 for operation in Austria. Without a moment"s hesitation the outstanding order for the last 25 units of the class 152 was turned into the class 182 and the DB bought locomotives identical to the ÖBB"s class 1116. Now, the ÖBB no longer had a reason to deny entry of the DB Cargo locomotives into Austria. These locomotives have a power output of 6,400 kilowatts / 8,582 horsepower and can be used in Germany and Austria with the prevailing catenary system of 15,000 volts / 16.7 hertz, but they can also be used in countries with a system using 25,000 volts / 50 hertz, such as Hungary. The future use of this class of locomotives is planned chiefly for cross border traffic.
