The German Federal Railroad classified former military locomotives under the series V 36, which was necessary due to the shortage of locomotives during the post-war period. These medium-sized locomotives with hydraulic power transmission were used for commuter traffic in larger cities and, until the development of the V 60, for switching work in freight stations.
