After they were retired from service on the German Federal Railroad, 20 units of the class 221 were sold to Greece. The Prignitz Railroad Group (PEG) recovered these locomotives after their second retirement and had them overhauled to the great interest of the media. These "prodigal sons" are now mainly used for freight and track laying trains all over Germany.
