The German Federal Railroad acquired a general-purpose locomotive in the class E 40, which was chiefly intended for heavy freight trains, but which also turned out to be excellent in passenger train service. The technical design was pretty much the same as the class E 10.1, only the gear reduction and the brake system were adapted to the different application. The very successful design and the large number of locomotives purchased led to wide use of this class, which was at home on almost all of the German Federal Railroad's electrified routes.
