The class V 80 ushered in a new era in German diesel locomotive construction. The first units were placed into service in 1952 as the first locomotives with hydraulic transmissions. Technical improvements were also present in the welding techniques for the frame, the trucks, and the body. The power drive with shafts with universal joints was also something new. The railroad followed the esthetics of the times in the flowing forms and streamlining for the locomotive's body. The V 80 was used as motive power for commuter and fast passenger trains as well as for light freight trains.
