Large quantities of heavy heating oil were required for the numerous, existing oil-fired steam locomotives. The German Federal Railroad purchased these 4-axle, high-capacity tank cars for this purpose. The good insulation of the inner tank and the sheathing with protective riveted metal sheets enabled transport even during the colder part of the year without the worry that the oil would become too viscous. These cars made it possible to guarantee seamless train service throughout the year by being able to supply the fueling stations and maintenance facilities with heavy heating oil.
