The main product of the blast furnace is crude iron. It is transported in torpedo ladle cars for further processing in the steel mill. The prototype for our model is an 18-axle special design car with an authorized total weight of 360 metric tons. The interior of the torpedo ladle is lined with fireproof brick so that the 1,350 degree Celsius hot load does not cool off, and so that the ladle does not melt through. Three to four of these cars can be seen in a train consist. Two-axle empty cars are coupled between these cars so that the authorized load on railroad bridges is not exceeded.
