The German Federal Railroad placed orders for various silo cars for the transport of powdered and finely granulated freight starting in 1955, and these cars were designed for more efficient filling and emptying. The cars were characterized by the silo-shaped containers, which varied in height and number depending on the model. The cars were filled by means of an opening on the top that could be closed by a lid; they were unloaded by means of a modern compressed air emptying system. The type Ucs 909 cars were higher than normal in order to increase the capacity compared to the standard type Ucs 908. They were therefore not approved for RIV traffic.
