Regular production of streamlined express train passenger cars was begun in 1939. These cars entered railroad history as the "Schürzenwagen" ("skirted cars") because of the deep skirting on the sides of the cars. Their weight was considerably reduced through the use of modern welding techniques. These cars were a favorite with both crews and passengers on account of their construction and equipment, and were kept in service until the start of the 1980s.
