At the start of the 1960s the German State Railroad in East Germany was buying new passenger cars. The car family corresponded to the type B of the OSShD (Association of East European Railroad Companies). The type Y was a further development of this design, and it was placed into service in large numbers starting in 1968. A typical feature of this car family is the parabolic shaped roof. The firm Waggonbau Bautzen built these cars. Large series of these cars were delivered to most of the other East European railroad companies as well as to the German State Railroad.
